3-Day Dual Language Enrichment Training Institute
Gómez & Gómez Elementary Dual Language Enrichment Program
INTRODUCTION
An important learning curve exists in this country as it relates to the establishment of Enrichment Instructional Programs (Dual Language) of high quality that recognize the linguistic and cultural assets of DLLs as key mediums for equitable schooling.
Dr. Leo Gómez, retired professor in Bilingual Education, has been extensively involved in the development, implementation and assessment of the Gómez & Gómez Elementary Dual Language Enrichment Model, originally developed in 1995. The Dual Language Training Institute is offering a 3-Day DLE Training Institute to provide deeper understanding using this DLE program. This 3-Day training institute provides the tools to continue to sustain a One-Way DLE Program for Dual Language Learners (DLLs) only or a Two-Way DLE Program for all students. The consistent implementation of this program has proven effective in improving the long-term academic and linguistic achievement (based on standardized test in reading & mathematics) of participating Spanish and English dominant students for the last 21 years.
Today, the Gómez & Gómez Elementary DLE Model is successfully implemented in over 700 elementary schools and the Secondary DLE Model is successfully implemented in 22 middle schools and 6 high schools in 145 school districts across 11 states serving thousands of DLLs and native English speakers: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
PURPOSE OF 3-DAY DLE TRAINING INSTITUTE
For districts & schools currently implementing the Gómez & Gómez DLE Program, the 3-Day DLE Training Institute will provide a deep philosophical, theoretical and pedagogical understanding of all program components and strategies. Topics will include purpose and benefits of DLE; program benchmarks; print-rich classrooms; LOD; Bilingual Pairs; Challenging, Interactive and Authentic (CIA) lessons following 7-Step Lesson Cycle; ELA/SLA Curriculum Mapping; BLCs, BRCs/PBL, and SVEs. This 5-Day training will enable participants to better support their respective DLE program at their school or district, increase program fidelity and sustainability and maximize student outcomes.
In a large number of districts and schools, the Gómez & Gómez DLE Model has been adopted as THE BILINGUAL PROGRAM serving ALL DLLs through One-Way Dual Language Enrichment increasing the academic achievement and graduation rates for this group.
DLTI is committed to DLE program success by building capacity across districts and schools resulting in more effective instructional programs for DLLs.
DLTI encourages implementing district or school's key leadership and support staff to attend this 3-Day DLE Training Institute to gain "deeper knowledge" (no certification) in order to provide stronger classroom support, increase program fidelity and sustainability, and maximize student outcomes.
NOTE: Districts or schools that are currently TOT certified on the Gómez & Gómez DLE Model, or in the process of completing TOT certification, will be able to continue their certification and/or complete the certification process. Certified trainers will be able to re-certify following established re-certification guidelines.
To certify "additional" TOT personnel, eligible district staff must begin certification process by attending the 3-Day DLE Training Institute (Phase 1).
